I had the best of intentions to post a sweet Mother’s Day blog post about how much Ethan loves his mom, and what a great mom Lauren is for Ethan. I had the best of intentions to write about how our mothers have influenced our ability to be great parents. Ethan had other intentions. That’s right, Ethan decided that on Mother’s Day, he wanted to visit the inside of an emergency room.
While harmlessly swinging on one of the railings at the local grocery store, Ethan inadvertently popped his elbow bones out of joint. The condition is called Nursemaid’s Elbow, which commonly occurs with kids under the age of 5. The writeup on WebMD said that it can scare the heck out of parents – and yes, that part is true. When you see your child’s arm limply hanging from their body, all kinds of thoughts go through your head. Fortunately, it took the doctor all of five minutes to pop the bones back to where they needed to be – to which Ethan exclaimed, “Mommy she fixed my arm!” And by the time I got to the hospital (I had been in the middle of painting the fence) this was the scene I was greeted with.

And after our little Man of Steel was discharged (in under an hour I might add) we decided to squeeze in a quick dinner at the local McDonald’s.

But in all seriousness, it was Lauren’s call to take Ethan to the emergency room. I was content to see how he felt after sleeping through the night. And I could go on and on about how great of a mother I think Lauren is, but her decision to take Ethan to the hospital is a great example of how much she loves her child and how she will move heaven and earth to take care of him.
So, happy Mother’s Day to our mothers, and happy Mother’s Day to my wonderful wife – who teaches me about love, patience, and selflessness every single day.

Brad,
My 2 yr old Zack did this about a month ago as well.

Yeah, it’s kind of wild and not something they prepare you for in “parenting class.” Of course now, we approach him almost like we can break him and are probably being overcareful at this point. Just don’t want to have to go through that experience again.
